Puerta Vieja, Cabo San Lucas

Puerta Vieja is a fairly new restaurant that features excellent food, great service, and a view that can't be beat. Tables inside and outside have a view of land's end; the spectacular rocks that mark the tip of the Baja peninsula.

The restaurant is named for the 150 year old front door, originally from India.

Puerta Vieja is owned by the same folks that run Villa Serena, not far away. Even though Puerta is more upscale than Villa Serena, it still offers its unbeatable lobster offer; two tails, beans, tortillas, and drawn butter for about $13 US.

Before coming home from one of our Cabo trips, we chose Puerta Vieja for our last night party, along with some friends we had met during our stay. Good choice. Not only did we have a great party with marvelous food, everyone ordered something different, so we got to see six examples of their entrees! (Please click on the small images to see a larger version.)

Before dinner, some of us had a classic Cesar salad. The salad was delicious, and the presentation unique. The lettuce leaves were bunched together and put through a hole in a crisp tortilla. This kept the salad together, and made room on the plate for the garlic crouton garnish. The tortilla was also very good to eat.

I had the T-Bone Steak and Lobster, and was very pleased. The quality of the meat was excellent, and done just the way I asked. As you can see from the photo, the tenderloin portion of the steak was very large; we would normally promote this steak from T-Bone to Porterhouse in the U.S. And the lobster was just as delicious as we knew it would be from having eaten at Villa Serena a few days before.

Nancy had the Thai Chicken, which was served with a very good peanut sauce. The chicken was tender and juicy, and grilled to perfection. It was was served with lettuce, fresh vegetables, and rice.

Tom had their Rib Eye Steak, going for the gusto. Considered the most flavorful of the steak family, it is often the choice of steak lovers everywhere. The one he got tonight was exceptional. Tom reported that this Sonoran beef was as good as it comes -- and he's from the mid west!

Greg went for the Red Snapper, and he was also pleased with his choice. Being the outdoors adventurous type, he really appreciated the serving style, although everyone in our party didn't agree! He said that the fish was as fresh as it could be, and was probably brought in that morning.

Elaine had the Surf and Turf, which got her both a lobster tail and a New York strip steak. Perfectly done and delicious, according to her. Like the other meals, it was served with mashed potatoes, gravy, and fresh vegetables.

Coleen's choice was Lobster and Filet. As you can see from the photo, this was one of the outstanding specialties at Puerta Vieja. She was delighted with her meal.

After dinner, we had Mexican coffee (decaf, even) made tableside and ignited for a spectacular display. That topped off a fun dinner party.

The next morning, Coleen had an omelet and I had Huevos Naufrago. Both came with a side of beans and fresh warm tortillas. The Huevos Naufrago came with steak arrachera, guacamole, beans, and rice. As you would expect, both were delicious. And at breakfast time, the view was at least as entrancing as it was the evening before.

Puerta Vieja is located at Km. 6.5, east of Cabo San Lucas toward the corridor. Get off the highway to the access road on the right after you pass CostCo, which is on the left. The Pemex gas station is a convenient place to do this, although you will get another chance or two down the road a little. For reservations call 104-3334.

Puerto Viejo has an excellent web site, and you can contact them for reservations or more information if you wish.
