Morgan's, San Jose del Cabo

Morgan's is consistently voted the best restaurant in San Jose del Cabo, and it certainly deserves the recognition. Morgan and Peter McGeown have created this fabulous restaurant, along with a companion eatery, Morgan's Encore, which is located only a couple of blocks away.

As it says on the front of the menu, Morgan's is "A hint of Tuscany, a whisper of Provence, the soul of the Mediterranean, in the heart of San Jose del Cabo". This upscale restaurant is very popular, and reservations are highly recommended.

The menu offers a dazzling array of soups, appetizers, and entrees. If you went to Morgan's for every special occasion, you would have so many delicious meals to choose from you would never tire of the place!

We started with fresh bread with a roasted garlic center. This unusual and tasty bread was even better when dipped in the olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Our appetizer was the Queso Rouladen, which was served sizzling hot from their Forno oven. This delicious treat is made of cheese rolled with fresh basil and sun dried tomatoes. After melting the cheese in the oven, it is served with crisp toasted garlic crusts and a mild tomatillo sauce. I promise you can't stop eating this until it's gone.

Coleen ordered the Coconut Crusted Prawns for her entree, and was delighted with her choice. The prawns had a touch of lime, and were served with wild apricot chile preserves with a hint of chipotle. Curry fruited rice was served on the side.

I chose the Braised Short Ribs, and was very pleased with my choice. As you can see at my Cooking Dude web site, I show Chipotle Short Ribs as the featured dish on the home page! So how could I not try Morgan's short ribs?

I was in for a treat. The ribs were seared and slowly braised in wine with caramelized garlic, shallots, and wild herbs. This creates a rich, dark sauce that is truly outstanding.

The ribs are served with horseradish creamed potatoes, topped by onion frizzles. And after the ribs are gone, the potatoes are a delicious way to sop up the last drops of sauce. The fresh vegetables were perfectly cooked, of course, and very tasty.

Believe it or not, we made room for dessert. We chose to share an order of apple pie with vanilla ice cream, which by its name alone sounds rather ordinary. Of course we new better, and were not disappointed when it arrived.

A little individual deep dish pie arrived, with a little pastry heart on top. The pie was delicious, and the ice cream with caramel sauce made a perfect accompaniment.

Morgan's is open daily from 6 pm to midnight, and dinner is served until 10 pm. Make reservations by calling 142-3825. In addition to the food and wine, you will enjoy the decor; the open kitchen, inviting bar, and Mexican decorations throughout. The atmosphere is as good as the food.

Morgan's is located at the corner of Manuel Doblado and Hidalgo in San Jose del Cabo. It is near the art gallery section of town, so park anywhere and enjoy the walk. (Please click on the small photos to see a larger version.)
